What I Would Do If I Had to Start Again

Growth Brews - Issue #009

My path into growth marketing was not typical at all.

Back in 2010, I was deeply involved in studying industrial engineering. I was getting ready for a career that would make even the most diehard math geeks snore.

As I struggled with my career choices, uncertain about moving away from the familiar field of engineering, life threw me a curveball.

I remember this like it was yesterday.

My mom called while I was working. I didn't pick up, but she kept calling. My first thought was, "Something must be wrong if mom is calling me at work."

I left the room and called her back to see what was happening.

Her words were, "Someone from a car company called our house looking for you and left a number for you to call back."

She knows I love cars, and working for this company would be a dream for me. I even owned one of their cars.

To my surprise, they weren't interested in my engineering skills. Instead, they thought I could be good at marketing for them.

This was totally new territory - a field I had never considered before. The decision wasn't easy. It meant venturing into the unknown and leaving everything I was used to behind.

Taking a leap of faith, I accepted the offer.

It was a critical moment that steered my career in a new direction. What began as a tentative step into the unknown turned into an exciting adventure in marketing.

It was in the marketing world that I found that spark. Blending creativity with analytical thinking.

13 years later, I have worked in various marketing roles. This led to me becoming a product director for paid ads, email marketing, optimization, and web development.

This newsletter will discuss the four skills I would focus on if I had to start over again in growth marketing.

Spoiler: Number 4 is the most important one and is often overlooked.

1. Data Analysis & Metrics Mastery

Data is at the heart of every successful marketing campaign. Imagine getting into a boat in the middle of the ocean without a compass or GPS. That's like having a growth strategy without good data to guide you in the right direction.

My career has shown me how powerful data can be. With strategies that increased leads by 62% for a B2B construction company and sales by over 100% for an electric bike brand.

Build Your Compass

Tools like Google Analytics, Excel (Google Sheets), and Databox/Tableau will be your pals as you navigate growth marketing.

Google Analytics detects how all visitors move around your website. It helps you understand where they come from, what they do, and why some leave without converting.

Databox/Tableau provides a visual way to see both small details and big-picture data across large datasets. This helps you spot patterns, trends, and anything out of the ordinary.

Excel (Google Sheets) allows you to analyze data in detail and precisely calculate your position in the market.
