Moving to Canada and a Huge Growth Marketing Lesson
Growth Brews - Issue #001
Yes, it was cold 🥶.
Hello, fellow growth adventurer!
Ever dreamt of packing your bags and exploring new horizons? That's exactly what I did when I moved to Canada for the first time in 2012.
It wasn't just about the maple syrup and hockey; it was a quest for cultural expansion and personal growth, and Toronto was my first pick.
Little did I know that this adventure would teach me invaluable lessons about the art of pivoting and seizing opportunities in business.
Grab your coffee and stay with me to learn how moving to another country taught me incredible lessons about growth strategies.
A Canadian Adventure
Picture this: Two months into a new job, my girlfriend tells me about a scholarship to study in Canada. I applied thinking it was a long shot, especially since only a handful of full scholarships are awarded to international students each year.
To my surprise, a university in Toronto approved my application, but they were dragging their feet in getting back to me. Then, out of the blue, I got a call in late October 2012: a university in Vancouver had seen my profile and wanted to offer me the scholarship, but I had to be there by January 1st.
Talk about a plot twist!
I had to choose: wait for Toronto or quit my new job, pack everything to move to another country in little over 2 months, and dive headfirst into the unknown in Vancouver.
Spoiler alert: I chose Vancouver, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life.
Lesson learned: Opportunities knock when you least expect them. In business, we often get tunnel vision, focusing on finding the perfect audience for our product.
But what if we flipped the script?
What if the goldmine is right under our noses, with an audience that's already on board with our brand? By looking at what your audience wants, you might discover new avenues for growth.
